The Top 10 Causes of Accelerated Skin Aging

Here is my list of the top 10 causes of accelerated skin aging (and any aging for that matter!). Some of them are easy to avoid and improve upon, while others take some serious lifestyle changes. Start with the easier ones and work your way through to the more involved ones. All of these 10 causes carry equal importance. I’ll expand on each of these points over time.

  1. Excessive and/or long-term sun exposure. 70% of what we consider chronological aging of the skin is actually sun damage.
  2. Recreational and pharmaceutical drugs including tobacco and caffeine. Smoking decreases the amounts of many nutrients in the body, one of which being vitamin C (around 25mg per cigarette) which is vital for healthy skin elasticity and a whole host of other important functions in the body.
  3. Poor diet causing nutritional deficiencies and dehydration from insufficient water intake. Water is involved in almost every bodily function and the skin holds several litres.
  4. Poor digestion & absorption. It’s not just what you eat that is essential for good health, but as importantly it’s what you absorb!
  5. Poor blood oxygenation from shallow breathing and air pollution.
  6. Toxicity and free-radical damage from environmental toxins, poor elimination (constipation, poor lymphatic drainage, poor kidney function etc.), and so on.
  7. Emotional issues such as stress and tension, suppressed emotions, depression, lack of joy, lack of fulfillment in life, insufficient amount of love, etc.
  8. Improper skincare and the use of toxic skincare products. My philosophy of skincare is that if you can’t eat it, it shouldn’t be on your skin.
  9. Lack of physical exercise causing decreased blood flow, poor lymphatic drainage, poor blood oxygenation, etc.
  10. Chronic diseases of any kind including hormonal imbalances.
